Viena no Engures ezera, pasaules nozīmes mitrāja, galvenajām problēmām ir aizaugšana ar virsūdens augiem. Darbā pētītas aizauguma izmaiņas laika no 1956. līdz 2007. g., izmantojot tālizpētes materiālu vizuālo interpretāciju. Landsat satelīta uzņēmumu analīzes metode tika aprobēta un pielietota virsūdens augu sezonālo variāciju noteikšanā.
No 1956. līdz 1972. g. ir bijis straujākais virsūdens augu pieaugums ūdens līmeņa pazemināšanas. To būtiski veicināja cilvēka saimnieciskās darbības sašaurināšanās ezera teritorijā.

Emergent plant overgrowth is one of the most important problems of the international importance wetland, Lake Engure. Visual interpretation of remote sensing materials has been used to detect changes of emergent plant occurrence from 1956 to 2007. A method has been approbated and utilised to detect emergent macrophyte seasonal variations from Landsat images.
The largest expansion of emergent macrophytes since lowering of water level happened from 1956 to 1972. This could be enabled by reduced economic activity in the lake. Emergent plat occurrence has been limited in aquatorium, which is deeper than 0.5 m. Considering only lake morphometry, it could be expected that emergent macrophytes should covers larger part of the lake.
Seasonal variation of emergent macrophytes has been estimated to be 180 to 200 ha.
Key words: historical aero photography, visual interpretation, shallow lakes, Land sat, NDVI.
