Amerikāņu feminisms, sievietes & feministisko tekstu politika Šarlotes P. Gilmanes īsajā stāstā „The Yellow Wall-Paper”

Abstract

Šis darbs ir mēģinājums izpētīt literāro tekstu lomu kā politisku instrumentu kustībā, kura vēršas uz dzimumu lomu izmaiņu izpēti vēlajā 19.gadsimtā un 20.gadsimta sākumā. Bakalaura darbs atspoguļo mana pētījuma rezultātus par vidējās klases sieviešu statusu Amerikas sabiedrībā un šī statusa reprezentāciju/izaicinājumu tā laika sieviešu autoru literārajos darbos. Šarlotes P. Gilmanes īss stasts The Yellow Wall-Paper tika izvēlēts literārai analīzei kā teksts, kurš ir vērsts uz vidējās klases sievietes statusu un nepieciešamību pēc tā izmaiņām, kā arī uz netiešu ierobežojumu izpausmēm, kas aicināja uz izmaiņām dzimumu lomās. Šis darbs sniedz pētījumu apskatu par 19.gadsimta Amerikāņu sieviešu statusu ar cieņu pret viņas tautību, klasi, kā arī aplūko modernizācijas efektus uz sieviešu prātu un Amerikāņu feminisma rašanos. Otrā darba daļa sniedz biogrāfisko aprakstu par Šarloti P. Gilmani un viņas īsā stāsta The Yellow Wall-Paper literāro analīzi. Analīze ļauj šī darba autorei diskutēt par sievietes rakstīta teksta politisko lomu sieviešu auditorijai, jo tas darbojas kā lauks, kurā paaugstināt viņu tiesības, ietverot arī sieviešu pārstavniecību vairākamā literatūrā.

This study is an attempt to investigate the role of a literary text as a political tool in women’s movement for changes in gender roles in the American society of the late 19th - early 20th centuries. This thesis presents the results of my research about the status of middle-class women in American society and its representation/challenge in women’s narratives of that period. Charlotte P. Gilman’s short story The Yellow Wall-Paper is chosen for the literary analysis as the text addressing a middle-class woman’s status and need for its change as well as manifesting implicit limitations of the call for a change in gender roles. The paper gives an overview of research on the status of American women of the 19th century with respect to their ethnicity, class and race in America of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as of the effects of modernization upon women’s consciousness and emergence of American feminism. This overview is followed with a biographical sketch of Charlotte P. Gilman and literary analysis of her short story The Yellow Wall-Paper. The analysis allows the author of the given paper to argue about the political role of a woman’s text for women’s audience as it functions as space for raising women’s issues otherwise subsumed in the representations of women in mainstream literature.
