The subject of bachelor’s paper is „The Great Wall of China and its Meaning from Historical Beginning to the 20th Century”. This paper includes three parts: the progress of construction of the Great Wall of China, the development of symbolic importance of the Great Wall of China 16-20th centuries and the Great Wall of China in poetic works of different historical epochs.
Extensive construction of the Great Wall of China started in 5th BC, when regional countries built fortifications to protect their boundaries from neighboring countries and the northern barbarians, but after the first Chinese emperor Shihuangdi united all countries in a single empire in 221 BC, walls across the northern border were connected and extended into a single line to protect China from aggressive northern invaders. This tradition has been continued with some interruptions until the disintegration of the Ming dynasty in 1644, when the Manchu established the Qing dynasty and began to rule over China. Qing was the last dynasty in Chinese history during the period between the 17th and 20th centuries when the Great Wall of China lost its major relevance and usefulness.
Although the Qing dynasty left the Great Wall of China neglected, in the early 20th century Chinese rediscovered it, however not because the Chinese border resumed attacks from the north, but because the newly established Republic was in need of its own national symbol. This paper presents the development of symbolic importance of the Great Wall of China till 20th century, and role it played in the consolidation of Chinese nation.
The chapter on the Great Wall in poetry examines fortification as a myth in the minds of poets of various historical epochs. In ancient times poetry was the only way to communicate in the state of civilization and the reflection of the present in historical heritage. The Great Wall of China has been an ambiguous and powerful symbol in this context.
