Intertextuality is one of the most powerful means to draw the consumer’s attention to a particular product.
The goal of the present paper is to analyse allusions to works of art in printed car advertisements within the framework of semiotics, and to define the impact of allusions on the perception of advertisements. The results of the research show that allusions guide the reader in understanding the advertising message both verbally and visually, and that advertisers have preferences for particular genres or frames of reference.
