| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | This linguistically-comparative research discusses the translation history. As the subject of the investigation manuscripts of Riga sovereign privileges are chosen, which were composed from 16th to the 18th century. These texts are compared with their Russian and German translations which were written in the 18th century. All used and transcribed materials are held in the custody of the Latvian State Historical Archives. The research attempts to show, with aid of many examples, the importance and function of translation practice in Russian Empire and Livonia. The objective of this work is to determine the dominant translation method of German-Russian legal texts in Riga. For this purpose two translation methods have been analyzed, which were typical for the 18th century, namely literal and free translation. The result has shown that despite the fact, that at this time the literal translation has not lost its relevance, the dominant position was held by the free translation, which reached its highest stage of development in the 18th century. The translations do not produce all the nuances of the originals, but substantially coincide with them. All examined privileges are not translated literally, but according to their meaning. | en_US |
