Valodai, kas tiek izmantota laikrakstu virsrakstos, raksturo specifiski komunikācijas mērķi un valodu līdzekļi. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir apskatīt un izpētīt laikrakstu virsrakstu īpašības un leksikas vienību funkcijas. Pēc teorijas salīdzinošās analīzes var secināt, ka virsrakstam piemīt stils, kas atrodams laikrakstu diskursā, ko raksturo specifisks leksikas lietojumus un īpašas leksikas stilistikas pazīmes. Virsrakstam iekapsulē dažādas funkcijas un autori izmanto dažādus valodu līdzekļus lai nodrošinātu šo funkciju izpildi. Leksiskā analīzē tiek pētīti amerikāņu laikraksta The New York Times, britu laikraksta Independent un latvijas laikraksta Baltic Times virsraksti. Pēc iegūto datu analīzes var secināt, ka, pat ja virsrakstam ir vienas un tās pašas funkcijas katrā valstī, dažādi autori un publikācijas lieto dažādus leksikas līdzekļus, lai sasniegtu virsraksta komunikatīvos mērķus. The language used in newspaper headlines is characterised by specific communicative purposes and linguistic means. The goal of the BA paper was to explore the peculiarities and the functions of various lexical units found in newspaper headlines. A comparative analysis of the relevant theories allowed us to conclude that the language used in headlines is a genre found in the newspaper discourse, which is characterized by the use of peculiar vocabulary as well as certain lexical stylistic devices. The headline encapsulates a variety of functions and the different lexical means that authors use contribute to the performance of these functions. The lexical analysis is conducted on selected headlines from the American newspaper The New York Times the British newspaper Independent and the Latvian newspaper written in English Baltic Times. The data received from the analysis allow us to conclude that even though headline have the same functions in every country, different authors and publications use different lexical means to achieve the communicative goals that headlines have.
