Maģistra darbs sastāv no četrām nodaļām.
The aim of the Master thesis “Analysis of Errors when Translating Websites of Latvian Cities and Towns into German” is to make a contribution to overall optimization of tourism texts’ translation, to develop recommendations for translators of tourism texts into a foreign language identifying the most frequent and relevant errors or inaccuracies. With this aim in mind there were 10 websites of Latvian cities and towns as well as tourism-related websites selected that are supported also in German. The German translations were evaluated and analyzed from the perspective of several language and translation criteria. The results of the research will be of interest for translators, particularly for translators into German and tourism text translators, as well as for translation theorists, professors etc.
The Master thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter characterizes the role and the types of tourism in Latvia, there are mentioned diverse statistical data as well as briefly described the test sources and limited the Master thesis area.
The second chapter is dedicated to the term “website”, it identifies and characterizes its text type as well as describes the language of tourism texts, its special features and mechanisms of action.
The third chapter characterizes the term “error” and the problem of its definition, there is the role of error analysis displayed, in addition the chapter reviews the main translation types and diverse models of translation analysis, describes the general translation problems and mentions several criteria of translation and error evaluation as well as explains the role and types of editing and proofreading.
The fourth chapter analyzes the German target texts, specifically the errors they contain. For this purpose the discovered errors were divided in two main categories (language and translation errors) and then in smaller groups. The discovered errors appear in separate subgroup tables with in an aim to determine their root causes, for each error the author also offered another translation version.
The analysis results show that the most frequent errors when translating into a foreign language are language errors (grammatical, syntactical, lexical), the following group are translation errors (pragmatic and cultural), common errors are also printing and spelling mistakes as well as pure careless mistakes. Several German texts show heavy translation errors with lost or twisted meaning. Certain problems for translators prepared also realia, mostly names of persons and places and their reproduction in German.
The most common and frequent translation error causes were identified as the following: carelessness, inaccuracy, lack of time, insufficient German language skills, source language interference, insufficient translation competence, non-use of proofreading and spellchecking etc. Шn the end of the Master thesis the author composed a list of competencies and skills that are necessary for a translator.
