The theme is “Evidence of Iron Smelting in Latvian Territory Prehistoric Period: Analysis of Historiography”.
Within the framework of the paper the author has set a goal to identify how broadly the issues of iron smelting have been reviewed in archaeological literature and what aspects have been reviewed – the way iron smelting issues are revealed, the connection between iron smelting and the development of the society, how the chronological limits of it have been described.
The study revealed that in historiography there can be found information about 39 monuments related to the evidence of iron smelting in Latvian territory, 22 of them having reduction furnace remnants. In the process of mapping it was found out that the location of the evidence in Latvian territory is not even which may indicate both – the range of the reduction process itself and the deficient archaeological research of Latvian territory.
