It is feasible to use magnetic filaments, which are easily controlled by varying the parameters of an external magnetic field, for the aforementioned purposes. In this work we have formulated a mathematical model of magnetic filaments that incorporates both the effects of twist and hydrodynamic interactions to varying degrees of approximation and implemented it in the form of two software libraries. We have used this model to explore the dynamics of both single filaments and ense mbles of filaments within a wide range of control parameters and to derive new results concerning the behavior of both ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic filaments in time dependent magnetic fields. Key words: magnetic filaments, Stokesian hydrodynamics, magnetic microswimmers, magnetic cilia.
