Advertising is a powerful communication tool used to persuade consumers to buy product or service, or to change consumer’s opinion about it. Persuasion methods differ and their choice is in the hands of the advertiser. One of them is the use of modal verbs and phrases in the texts, by which opinion and attitude towards the situation are expressed. This study was influenced by the theoretical background as well as previous researches. The research methods used were a summative analysis of the relevant theories and discourse analysis as an empirical method. The purpose of this paper was to analyse modal verbs and phrases used in beauty care product advertising. The findings show that the most frequently used modal verb is can; however, can and some other modal verbs are polysemantic; therefore the messages can express either epistemic and deontic modality, or both depending on the context. Modal verbs are ambiguous in their meanings, as well as, they are not the only means which influence the modality level. The modality level can be influenced also by modal markers and mood.
