Tiem seko pārliecinošākas nozīmes palīgdarbības vārdi – will un can. Language can be used to influence and persuade people; therefore, it is necessary to analyze the means to do that and what effect they have on a reader. The current research aims to analyze the use of modal verbs and phrases in 37 economic texts from The Economist to further examine which meanings are expressed through specific modals. Discourse analysis and frequency analysis were applied to reach this goal. Results revealed that the articles are rather descriptive and informative not influential as they mostly employ epistemic meaning. Dynamic meaning is used to express ability or dynamic possibilities. Deontic meaning was used rarely to indicate inescapable or medium obligation. Regarding modal auxiliaries, more tentative modals would and may were used the most often. They were followed by modal auxiliaries expressing higher level of certainty – will and can.
