The goal of this research is to determine condition of the Latvian and Lithuanian literary collaboration and to describe cross-cultural problematics of communication in the context of translation of Lithuanian novels. To achieve this goal, Latvian and Lithuanian literature are viewed in the context of cultural history, the data of Lithuanian-Latvian translations and also reviews describing the novels are analysed. In the research a conclusion is made that in Latvia the existing unpopular status of the Lithuanian novels is explained by referring to the term brothers Lithuanians, meaning that Lithuanian literature is seen as a marginal thing and therefore it is insignificant. The author states that at the basis of unpopularity are the differences of the literary tradition and codes, which reader does not always comprehend.
