Darba autore sniedz ieskatu Entonija Smita etnosimbolisma pieejā nāciju un nacionālismu pētīšanai, tās saistību ar Ernesta Gelnera modernisma teoriju un modernisma teorijas kritikas analīzi. Saskaņā ar etnosimbolisma teoriju, nozīmīgi nacionālo valsti veidojošajie aspekti ir - tautas izcelsmes mīti, kopīgas tautas vēstures atmiņas, etniskās kopienas kultūras mantojums. Noslēgumā aplūkota globalizācija, starpkultūru konflikti, to saistība ar mītu veidošanos. Author of the paper provides insight in Anthony Smith’s ethno-symbolist approach to nation and nationalism research, within the contex of Ernest Gellner’s modernist theory and the analysis of the critique of modernist theory. According to the theory of ethno-symbolism, essential elements of national state are - myths about origin of nation, common memories about the history of nation, cultural heritage of ethnie. .Globalization, intercultural conflicts, their relevance to myth shaping are also considered. Author has come to the conclusion that nations are not just the phenomena of modern epoch. Representatives of the modernist theory aren’t able to explain formation of the national state thoroughly, because they disregard changes in the “inner world” of nation. Nation is a process, not a static target. National identity is capable of mass mobilization of people, and in the impact of globalization it’s ability to cause loyalty and solidarity among inhabitants of national state isn’t decreasing, but on the contrary - increasing.
