Plato's “Parmenides” consists of two parts. The first reveals a number of problems that concern the relation between forms and particulars. The declared aim of the second part is to turn the young Socrates into an adept advocate of the theory of forms. But the exercise leads to all kinds of (apparent) contradictions which makes its role in the dialogue uncertain. In this paper I argue that the exercise shows how to qualify statements like “F-ness itself is F” which, when left unqualified, lead to problems discussed in the first part. The solution requires to accept that some forms are relational, i.e., that they are what they are only in relation to their correlative forms.
