The Master’s thesis Indicators of biological diversity structures and the functionality of the riparian forests of the buffer zone of Pilsupe analyses the historical succession of the dominating tree species in the Riparian forests of the Pilsupe river on the basis of the forest inventory data, projecting the future succession from the existing advance-growth, as well as assesses the potential pollution-delaying capacity of the organic soil cover in relation to the age of the forest land, and the current incidence and quality of the EU protected habitats in buffer zones of the Pilsupe river relative to age of the forest land. It was concluded that the number and the area of mature and over-mature trees over the last 86 years in Pilsupe riparian zone has increased; an observed trend was replacement of early successional tree species in the upper storey later-successional tree species; the later-successional tree species (lime, maple, black alder) are very likely to become regenerated in the current grey alder stands etc.). The existing EU protected habitats are mainly located on forest lands older than 86 years however the habitat Alluvial Forests has established itself in good quality also on recent forest land. In grey alder forests a trend towards larger bare soil area was observed, which in combination with a swift turnover of trees can impair the buffer zone capacity for retaining the runoff of organic matter to the river; however further research is necessary to confirm this. key terms: buffer zones, tree succession, EU protected biotopes, short-cycled tree species
