dc.description.abstract | Evaluative lexis, also referred to as appraisal, is a specific approach used to explore, describe and explain how language is used to express one’s evaluation of certain phenomena or behaviour, as well as how one adopts a particular stance towards the value proposition conveyed by a text. Appraisal is one of the three major discourse semantic resources construing interpersonal meaning, with involvement and negotiation. The purpose of the study is to explore how product descriptions employ different evaluative lexis and how the proper usage of evaluative lexis can be used as a strategy to increase sales. The methodology used in this study is corpus linguistics, which primarily focuses on the use of language and helps to discover patterns by the use of quantitative analysis with qualitative elements. First, the results have shown that the analysed product descriptions do not follow certain set of rules in terms of moves, however all the descriptions share the same purpose, which is promoting the product. Second, the analysis reveals that the most commonly used engagement strategy is ‘monoglossia’, and at the same time the most frequent graduation strategy is ‘raise’.
