The main interest of this paper is the concept and understanding of anxiety in theology of Paul Tillich. P. Tillich provides a completely different explanation of the causes of anxiety and how to conquer it than it is in classical psychology. For Tillich anxiety is related to human’s existential questions and situation in this world. Therefore Tillich calls it existential anxiety also distinguishing it from nonexistential anxiety that can be treated trough psychotherapy while existential anxiety can never be completely conquered because it has an ontological root. The objective of this paper is to study what Tillih says about existential and nonexistential anxiety and how it can be conquered with courage to be that is rooted in God who has become our ultimate concert. The thesis statement: Anxiety and fear can be overcome with courage to affirm oneself and one’s being in spite of threat of nonbeing.
