Valdas Adamkus un Vaira Vīķe–Freiberga: rietumu politiskā līderība postkomunistiskā Lietuvā un Latvijā

Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga un Valdas Adamkus ir divi izcili politiskas līderības paraugi Latvijā un Lietuvā. Viņu politiskie uzskati nobrieda trimdā Rietumos, bet prezidentiem bija jācenšas tos uzskatus pielietot postkomunistiskā Latvijas un Lietuvas realitātē. Adamkus mēģināja transformēt politisko kultūru un partiju sistēmu; bet kad viņam tas neizdevās viņš koncentrējās uz ārpolitiskiem mērķiem un mēģināja atbalstīt reformas citas postkomunistiskajās valstīs, arī popularizēt pilsoniskās sabiedrības idejas savā valstī. Vīķe-Freiberga apņēmās pacelt Latvijas pašpārliecību mājās un starptautisko organizāciju acīs. Šis maģistra darbs ir mēģinājums salīdzināt prezidentu politiskās stratēģijas Rietumu politiskās domas par politisko līderību gaismā. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga and Valdas Adamkus are two prominent examples of political leadership in their respective countries. Their political attitudes matured in exile, but they had to make them work in the reality of post-communist Latvia and Lithuania. Adamkus tried to transform political culture and party system of Lithuania; after he failed to do that he concentrated on foreign policy goals and tried to support reforms in post-communist region as well as promote ideas of civil society in his home country. Vīķe-Freiberga was determined to boost Latvia’s self-confidence at home and in the eyes of international organizations. This thesis is an attempt to compare political strategies of both presidents in the light of Western political thought on political leadership.
