This Bachelors work includes in itself research about postmodernism and how it is represented in the novel „Measuring the World“(2005) by Daniel Kehlmann. At first, the definition for postmodernism has been narrowed down and its prevailing characteristics have been highlighted for further use and compare to the novel and determine, whether it is or isn’t postmodern. Following up is some information about the author, his opinions on the novel and his work in general, as well as fragments from other works, which were focused on researching the author himself. And last up is a short summary of the roman and an examination of symbolistics highlighted in the novel, which were found to be most similar to the postmodern characteristics. With the making of this work I’ve come to a personal realization, that postmodernism shouldn’t be viewed as a genre, which has specific criteria to be fulfilled by a novel to be considered as such, but more as a method, which can be used to reminisce older symbols and which allows you to show the symbol in a different light through different methods of repetition and recreation. Concerning the novel itself I’ve come to the conclusion, that thanks to the author’s writing style and chosen topic, enough symbolics can be found, which make this novel acceptable under the postmodern genre.
