Role of the socioeconomic factors and regional policy in the demographic development of Latvia

Abstract

Promocijas darbā ir izpētīta reģionālā demogrāfiskā attīstība Latvijā ar mērķi noteikt savstarpējās sakarības starp reģionu demogrāfisko dinamiku, to ietekmējošajiem sociāli ekonomiskajiem faktoriem un reģionālās politikas pasākumiem. Darbā uzsvērta laika un telpas dimensija, kas ir ļoti svarīga, atklājot jaunas, iepriekš nekonstatētas reģionālas demogrāfiskās problēmas. Autors secina, ka personīgie ienākumi un nodarbinātība ir pozitīvās reģionālās demogrāfiskās attīstības svarīgākie priekšnosacījumi. Tiek pierādīts, ka ES fondu ieguldījumi spēj pozitīvi ietekmēt dažus demogrāfiskus procesus un to ietekmei ir raksturīgs telpiskās pārteces efekts. Vēsturiskās un telpiskās analīzes rezultāti atklāj, ka dažādas, šķietami līdzīgu mūsdienu reģionu grupas var atšķirīgi reaģēt uz līdzīgiem reģionālā atbalsta pasākumiem. Given Doctoral thesis is devoted to the research of regional demographic development in Latvia, with the aim of determining the causalities and interactions between regional demographic development, socio-economic factors and regional policy interventions. Dimensions of time and space are highlighted to be of ultimate importance for uncovering new, previously undetected issues. Author concludes that personal income and employment remain to be the most significant predictors for key regional demographic indicators, and that there are observable spatial spillover effects of the EU funds in relation to some indicators of the population change. Results of historical and spatial analysis indicate that groups of municipalities currently showing similar population dynamics may have different long-term reactions to similar regional aid measures.
