The research paper is devoted to the analysis of the coordinating conjunctions in the compound sentences in the British National Corpus. The goal of the research is to investigate the frequency and the variety of coordinating conjunctions which link independent clauses in the compound sentences of the texts grouped according to the formality level in four registers (academic, fiction, newspaper and conversation) in the British National Corpus. The applied theoretical research method was the comparative analysis of the theories on coordinating conjunctions, compound sentences, register and corpus. The following qualitative research method was used – description of the extracted compound sentences. The following quantitative research methods were applied: first, corpus based extraction of compound sentences; then such methods of descriptive statistics as the absolute and relative frequency analysis of compound sentences and coordinating conjunctions and the arithmetical mean. The results revealed that that the texts of the registers which are less formal have higher frequency and variety of coordinating conjunctions which link independent clauses in compound sentences in British National Corpus.
