The present thesis is devoted to the analysis of adjectives and emoticons in the microblog twitter.com messages. The goal of the research is to detect whether the users of twitter.com tend to supplement or replace adjectives with emoticons when expressing thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The theoretical part of the thesis reviews literature on spoken and written communication, the functions of language, emotions, adjectives, and language of the Internet, specifically, microblogs and twitter.com, whereas the empirical part analyses messages from the microblog twitter.com containing adjectives and emoticons. The research method applied in the study is corpus analysis of the microblog twitter.com messages. The findings indicated that there is a growing tendency towards the usage of emoticons when expressing feelings, emotions and thoughts, as the microblog twitter.com forces users to post their messages in the limitation of 140 characters.
