SUMMARY Background. Metabolic syndrome is widespread in society, and with age the number of patients with metabolic syndrome is significantly increasing. Evidence shows twice as many cardiovascular events and five times the increase in type 2 diabetes in people with metabolic syndrome. Reduced or over-prolonged sleep increases the incidence of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Objective of the study. Determine connection between metabolic syndrome and sleep duration. Research materials and methods. The study was conducted at the Department of Endocrinology and Rheumatology of the PSKUS and ambulatory part of the Endocrinology Center with 32 participants. The following data was recorded in a specially designed questionnaire: anthropometric data - waist circumference, weight, BMI; clinical and laboratory data from patient medical cards: arterial blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose. Each patient was interviewed on sleep time and caffeine use patterns. Quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional study. Statistical processing performed with SPSS Version 22. Results. Study was distributed in two groups with and without adverse diseases without the metabolic syndrome. It was concluded that in the group with other related illnesses there is a statistically significant greater waist circumference and more commonly arterial hypertension (p <0.05). 85% of respondents spend 6 to 8 hours sleeping a day, but 31% of respondents spend 9 hours sleeping specifically on weekends. The relationship between reduced or increased sleep duration and other conditions without MS was not found. Comparing the consumption of caffeine-containing beverages among groups, 4 and more cups are more commonly used by respondents in the group without other related illnesses - 39%, while in the second group with other adjacent illnesses - 14% respondents consume 4 or more cups per day. Summary. Arterial hypertension has a high correlation with abdominal obesity and diabetes mellitus and the consequent consequences. Over-long sleep > 9 hours and too short sleep time <5 hours is associated with metabolic syndrome risk, but this association was not found in the study. The relationship between sleep duration, metabolic syndrome and caffeine ingestion should be done with a greater number of respondents.
