The aim of the dissertation is to clarify whether analytical and emotional intelligence, coping and psychological defense mechanisms are different for the unemployed and the employed and what are interconnections between these variables. For achievement of the objective of the Doctorate Paper, for the first time in Latvia two questionnaires are adapted: Defense Style Questionnaire and Life Style Index, and in addition such tests as Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities International Edition (Latvian version), Strategic Approach to Coping Scales, Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory are used in the Study. In two selections equated by the age (from 18 to 52 years), gender (85.2% women and 14.8 % men) and education level and marital status – 115 unemployed and 115 employed participants – it was established that in Latvia during the period when the unemployment level was still low (2006-2008), there existed significant differences of several studied variables between the employed and unemployed persons, important correlative interconnections between these constructs, as well as the results have outlined several psychological profiles predicting the employed status on the basis of measurements of analytical and emotional intelligence, defense styles and coping strategies. On the whole these results show that all these variables differentiate the employed status.
Keywords: analytical and emotional intelligence, coping, psychological defense mechanisms, employment status.
