The Doctoral Thesis highlights the issue of delimiting the number of meanings of polysemous words. Polysemous verbs of movement have been selected for this research; namely, verbs that characterise movements with body parts, movements of entire body or thing, movements by a means of transportation and movements and processes of nature. The following methodology and theories have been applied to examine the systems of meaning of polysemous verbs of movement: componential analysis, distributional analysis, prototype theory and the theory of mental space.
The systems of meaning of polysemous words consist of the basic meaning, secondary meanings and transferred meanings. Therefore interrelations between the meanings of polysemous verbs of movement are also explored in the Doctoral Thesis, and the most typical metaphorically and metonymically motivated meanings of verbs of movement have been examined.
Pairs of homonyms have been established in the thematic group of verbs of movement, therefore the Doctoral Thesis also focuses on the topical issue of delimiting of polysemy and homonymy.
