This work looks at Hans-Georg Gadamer’s approach to aesthetics and art, which proceeds on the background of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. The aim of this work is to figure out the problem of Gadamer’s justification for modern art and its possible solution. To reach this goal, the history of the problem of justification of art since the ancient era has been followed, leading to to the renewal of this issue in the context of modern art. The solution, which includes the overcoming of “aesthetic consciousness”, is then explained by incorporating the experience of art into a general realm of human experience. This overcoming is discussed with the help of Gadamer’s proposed concepts, which are the concepts of “play”, “symbol” and “festival”. In the closing part of the work, Gadamer’s narrative of the justification of art is incorporated in the wider context of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, which complements the previous understanding of the notion of art.
