No rezultātiem secināts, ka
izmantot to kā papildus līdzekli tumšo starpzvaigžņu miglāju ķīmisko procesu skaidrošanai.
Zinātnes nozarē nozīmīgs var būt iespējamais atklājums, ka molekulas starpzvaigžņu ledū tikai
nelielā mērā ir bagātinātas ar deiteriju. Turpmākais modeļa pielietojums, īpaši, to pilnveidojot, ir
The formation of stars and planetary systems is an important research discipline in
astrophysics. The conditions of their place of origin determine the properties and subsequent
evolution of these objects. Also, the evolution of the Protosolar nebula has determined the
properties and composition of Solar system bodies.
The formation of stars occurs in interstellar molecular clouds. Dark, dense pre-stellar cores
form in the clouds via gravitational contraction. They last for about a million years, before a
protostar has formed. Almost all chemical elements, heavier than He, freeze-out onto interstellar
dust-grains. While the protostar forms, the cloud core transforms into a protoplanetary disk. A
varied gas-phase and ice chemistry characterizes the cores and the disks.
The chemistry in these objects is investigated by observing various chemical species. The
species are either in the gas-phase or in the solid-phase as ice frozen onto the dust-grains. For the
interpretation of the observations and in order to determine the underlying physics in these objects,
astrochemical modeling is used.
At low temperature, gas-phase species accumulate onto the dust-grains. It is among the
primary processes for the influence of dust on the composition of molecular clouds. The
accumulated species are then chemically processed in the ice-phase. Their transformations are the
subject of research of this paper. It is shown that chemical changes of the molecules in the ice occur
in the mantle layers below the surface. In current astrochemical models the chemical transformation
of the subsurface ice mantle is ignored.
A concept describing the ice-mantle chemical processing with a mathematical model has
been proposed by the author. The description is justified by the published results of many
experiments with interstellar ice analogues. It is the first attempt to unite the experimental results
in a theoretical model that is able to produce quantitative results. Some observational results of
star-forming sites are hardly explained by existing models. This problem is becoming even more
obvious in a time, when instruments with extraordinary spatial and spectral resolution (ALMA,
JWST) are developed.
There have been no similar astrochemical calculations yet. Because of this, a new
methodology for result analysis has been elaborated in this paper. The calculation results show that
sub-surface processing of ice may have a profound impact on the chemical composition of the ice
and the gas (after ice sublimation). It is especially so because the layers below the outer-surface of
the ice mantle contain most heavy-element atoms in the pre-stellar cores.
Even with the conceptual model described in this paper it is possible to propose a solution for
several known problems in astrochemistry. The possible discovery that interstellar ice is only
slightly enriched with deuterium may be of major importance in the field. Generally the model may
serve as an additional tool to explain the chemistry of molecular clouds. The subsequent use and
improvement of the model is promising, and is needed in order to improve the current
understanding on the processes at work in star-forming sites.
