dc.description.abstract | Conceptual metaphor is pervasive in language, and its use can contribute to raising people’s awareness of topical issues. The current thesis aimed to study the framing of ecological problems in recent environmental discourse. The goal of the research was to examine the source domains used in relation with the target domain of ecology. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in a corpus-based study of environmental metaphors used in The New York Times and The Guardian online articles, revealing twelve major conceptual metaphors commonly used to frame environmental problems. The most prominent source domains used to explain various climate change-related notions were movement, war, and danger. Two clashing ideas painting either nature or humans and the fossil fuel industry as the victim of climate change were featured in the metaphors. It was concluded that climate change was mostly portrayed in a negative and contradictory manner in the selected online newspaper articles.
