Darbs sastāv no divām daļām. The bachelor's thesis "History and Role of Tiananmen Square in China’s Culture" studies beginnings of the Tiananmen Square, the development of the square, the connection with various events in the history of China and the buildings on and around the square. Tiananmen Square is located in the heart of Beijing and has hosted a number of important events particularly in the history of modern China. Although the square is largely known for the tragic consequences of the 1989 student demonstrations, its significance is much deeper in Chinese history and culture. In the course of the work, it was found out that despite the fact that Tiananmen Square became a square only in the 17th century its history dates back to the 15th century and during its existence it has performed various functions. Initially, it served as a market square, but after it became an official square, the people were denied access to it because the square served as a venue for ceremonies led by the emperor. After the Chinese Empire was overthrown, Tiananmen Square became accessible to the people and became the main venue for student-led demonstrations after the May Fourth Movement. In 1949, while standing in the square, Mao Zedong proclaimed the PRC a state. Since the 20th century the square has become the symbolic center of China. The paper consists of two parts. The first part, "History and Development of Tiananmen Square", looks at the history of the square, the changes that have affected it, how it relates to various important events in Chinese history and the square today. In the second part “Architectural and cultural environment of Tiananmen Square” the buildings on the Tiananmen Square, their appearance, history and why they were built are discussed. The paper consists of 52 pages.
