Pierre Hadot (1922 – 2010) is a modern French philosopher and intellectual historian. In his work with ancient texts the philosopher faces originality and irregularity of these that has led to his contemplation about philosophy, which is not a theory or abstract system, but progress-oriented existential experience or art of living.
Hadot is interested in philosophy as conversion of his own life, from changing the opinion up to complete transformation of vision about himself, the world and his presence in the world.
Orientation of this advancement starts form the Ego that is suppressed by unjustified fear, concerns and passions towards the transcendental Ego that is able “to rise above” and perceive oneself as a part of harmonious Universe, where anything happening is just conformity with natural laws existing in the world. However such change of the personality can only be the result of deliberate and aim-oriented efforts, and these efforts are mental training. It is work upon oneself , for demonstration of which the philosopher uses philosophical techniques offered by the ancient world. These techniques are as the results of experimental laboratory of human well-being, which an individual of nowadays may integrate in the project of improvement his or her life.
