Latviešu identitāte prozas tulkojumos angļu valodā: Noras Ikstenas “Mātes piens”

Abstract

Pētījuma mērķis ir apzināt, vai un kā Noras Ikstenas romāna "Mātes piens" identitātes aspekti ir saglabāti tā angļu valodas tulkojumā "Soviet Milk". Pētījumā izceltie oriģinālromāna identitātes aspekti ir ‘trauma’, ‘padomju sieviete’ un ‘latvietība’. Pirmā nodaļa ietver biogrāfisku pārskatu par Noru Ikstenu un romāna tulkotāju Margitu Gailīti, informāciju par oriģināla un tulkojuma recepciju, kā arī sižeta kopsavilkumu. Otrajā nodaļā sniegts trīs izcelto identitātes aspektu teorētiskais pamatojums, atsaucoties uz teorijām par traumu, feminismu, nacionālo un lingvistisko identitāti. Trešā nodaļa ir romāna "Mātes piens" un tulkojuma "Soviet Milk" salīdzinošā analīze, kas papildināta ar tulkojumteoriju komentāriem. Pētījumā konstatēts, ka "Soviet Milk" ir ievērojams skaits izlaidumu un stilistisko noviržu, kā rezultātā grāmata "Soviet Milk" raksturojama kā adaptācija un to nevar uzskatīt par atbilstošu latviešu identitātes tulkojumu.

The research goal is to determine the extent to which the aspects of identity in Nora Ikstena’s Latvian novel "Mātes piens" are preserved in its English translation, "Soviet Milk." The aspects of identity singled out in the original novel are ‘trauma,’ ‘Soviet woman,’ and ‘Latvian.’ Chapter one presents a biographical overview of Nora Ikstena and translator Margita Gailītis, details on the reception of "Mātes piens" and "Soviet Milk," and the story’s plot summary. Chapter two gives the theoretical background for the three aspects of identity through theories on trauma, feminism, and national and linguistic identity. Chapter three is a comparative analysis of "Mātes piens" and "Soviet Milk," accompanied by commentary based in translation theory. It is established that "Soviet Milk" features a significant number of omissions and stylistic deviations. It is concluded that "Soviet Milk" constitutes an adaptation and therefore may not be considered an acceptable translation of Latvian identity.
