In this study R. maritimus ability to grow and accumulate heavy metals in heavy metal treated soil with the addition of salt (NaCl) and nitrogen was evaluated in greenhouse conditions. In the first greenhouse experiment R. maritius was treated with salts of five heavy metals, – Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn, each metal in three different concentrations. Plant physiological and morphological parameters and heavy metal concentrations in roots and leaves were assesed. All heavy metals R. maritimus accumulated in higher concentrations in leaves than in roots of in higher concentrationsR. maritimus, than in roots, most of the heavy metals were accumuleted in dead leaves. Cd, Cu and Pb concentrations in dead leaves exceeded the hyperaccumulation threshold. Heavy metal toxicity symptoms were observed only for plants treated with the highest concentrations of Cd and Zn. In the second greenhouse experiment plants were treated with Cd, Cu and Pb in combination with two substrate concentrations of NaCl and Ca(NO3)2. NaCl improved plant ability to accumulate Cd and Cu, but it had negative effect on Pb accumulation. Nitrogen had no signifficant effect on heavy metal accumulation, but it increased plant growth in all treatments and alleviated Cd and Cu toxicity. No Pb toxicity was observed in nether of the experiments, indicating good tolerance to this metal.
