This paper examines the role of alcohol and its function in the Japanese business etiquette. In order to understand the role of alcohol in the modern Japanese business environment, this paper studies alcohol within the framework of Japan’s historical perspective. A company’s role in one’s lives and the cultural behavior principles that affect one’s behavior in joint drinking activities are taken into consideration as well. In addition, the paper discusses the degree of alcoholism in Japan and the ways it is being reduced, particularly the changing attitude of younger generations towards work and values changes in connection with the work in the company and the alcohol within the business etiquette.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the causes of high level alcohol consumption among Japanese salarymen.
The main conclusion of the paper suggests that the reason for this high level of alcohol consumption among Japanese salarymen extends from an historically entrenched positive attitude of Japanese society towards alcohol as means of escaping work accumulated stress. Other reasons include alcohol consumption being utilized as a means of building group consciousness and ensuring a better relationship within the company as well as within the wider business environment.
