Nereduktīvā materiālisma aizstāvība: U. T. Pleisa un Dž. R. Serla filozofijas salīdzinājums

Abstract

Bakalaura darbs ir kritisks U. T. Pleisa (U. T. Place) un Dž. R. Serla (Dž. R. Searle) psihes filozofijas teoriju izvērtējums un salīdzinājums. Abi filozofi mēģina rast psihes-ķermeņa problēmai tādu risinājumu, kas iekļautos fizikālisma pasaules formulējuma ietvaros. Pleisa pieeja ir reduktīva, bet Serla – nereduktīva. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot, kura no abām pieejām fizikālisma ietvaros ir spējīga dot veiksmīgāku psihes skaidrojumu. Lai to noskaidrotu, vispirms darbā tiek aplūkota redukcijas metodes un to problemātiskie psihes aspekti. Aplūkojot Pleisa psihes koncepciju, tiek analizēts psihes problemātisko aspektu redukcijas mēģinājums un parādīts, ka teorija nespēj izvairīties no nereducējamā atlikuma problēmas. Tam seko Serla psihes filozofijas aplūkojums. Darba pēdējā daļa ir veltīta tam, lai uz salīdzinoša abu teoriju izvērtējuma pamata noteiktu to koncepciju, kura sniedz pilnīgāku psihes skaidrojumu.

The Bachelor thesis is a critical comparison and evaluation of U. T. Place’s and J. R. Searle’s theories in the philosophy of mind. Both philosophers try to find a physicalistic solution to the mind-body problem. Place's approach is reductive, Searle's - nonreductive.The aim of this thesis is to determine which of the two approaches is more successfull in finding a physicalistic explanation of the mind. To do that, the thesis provides an overview of the methods of reduction and the aspects of the mind that are problematic to reductionism. Reviewing the theory of Place, his attempt to reduce the problematical aspects of the mind is analized and is claimed that his theory cannot escape the problem of „nomological danglers” (irreducible remnant). Next, the philosophy of Searle is analized by comparing it to the reductionist theory by Place. In the last section, both theories are compared and conclusions about the advantages and problems of these theories are made. Keywords: mind, consciousness, physicalism, Place, Searle.
