No pētījumā izvirzītām trīs hipotēzēm nav apstiprinājusies neviena.
Atslēgas vārdi: laika uztvere, ticība pēcnāves dzīvei, vecums The objective of the study was to examine age differences in temporal inefficacy, that is, discontent with the uncontrollability of the passage of time experienced as linear; subjective predominance of the present and; after death beliefs. It was hypothesised that the younger adults will have higher temporal inefficacy and more expressed subjective predominance of the present as compared to the older adults; the older adults will perceive distant past as subjectively more important than the younger adults; and finally –the beliefs in life after- death will be stronger among the older adults.
Seventy three participants – aged 22 – 85 – were organized into 3 groups, namely 22-30 years old (n=25), 31-60 years old (n=24) and 61-85 years old (n=25).
The participants were asked to respond to the questions of Temporal Inefficacy Scale (Petrican & Burris, 2011), After Death Belief Scale (Burris & Bailey, 2009), and The Duration Inventory (Cottle, 1964).
None of the initial hypotheses was confirmed by the results of the study. However significant differences between the older and younger adults were discovered with respect to the perception of subjective predominance of the present, where the older adults perceived the present as more predominant comparing to the younger adults.
Contrary to the expectation no differences were observed between the groups in temporal inefficacy or subjective evaluation of the distant past. There were no differences discovered between the groups in after death beliefs.
The groups demonstrated significant differences in subjective evaluation of the present, with younger adults considering present as more important than older adults, who in turn had estimated the present as longer, comparing to younger adults. Significant differences were discovered between the three groups in their perception of subjective importance of distant future – the older adults considering distant future as less important, comparing to the other two groups.
Key words: perception of time, after death beliefs, aging
