The title of Diploma work is „Reading teaching for children with autism in „C” level grade”. In the job there is described a problem of perception of language for children with autism and severe and profound mental retardation. There is used analysis of pedagogical literature, estimate of mathematical statistics of the results of students’ activities, experimental pedagogical methods.
The research has been accomplished in 5th Special School of Riga.
The goal of the research is to explore a possibility to acquire reading skills of students with autism and severe or profound mental retardation.
In the Diploma work there is described practical pedagogical methods for developing reading skills for children with autism and mental retardation. The results of research gave evidence that 1% of children with autism and severe or profound mental retardation are able to acquire simple reading skills and comprehend a read text in circumstance if they are offered short reading matter about narrow domestic things using 5 – 7 short sentences. If an actual level of development of child with autism and severe or profound mental retardation is not high enough to acquire reading skills then there is possibility to utilize sensory education and creation of demonstrative learning environment for developing child’s perception of language and comprehension ability.
Within the framework of Diploma job the author summarized her in 9 years step by step developed didactic materials what help for students with autism and severe or profound mental retardation to develop language skills and abilities. The didactic materials are gathered in order from the easiest to complicate. Students need to use different sensory organs, basically vision and touch, working with these materials.
In the theoretical part of Diploma work is discovered statement of reason why exactly sensory perception is the leading sphere for above mentioned children language development. In the practical part is described reading teaching process itself.
