114 persons participated in the research, 79 of them were women (average age 33,025, (10,929)) and 35 were men (average age 30,857, (7,930)).
The following set of instruments was used during the research: 1) a photograph of a of overweight woman weight and the same photograph modified with help of a computer program in order to reduce dimensions of the body of the woman to the normal ones; 2) Evaluation of the photograph – a questionnaire of 33 pairs of contrary statements which the respondent should use for evaluation of the woman on the photograph. The statements covered different areas of life: job and career, family and relationships, friendship, personal features; 3) Socio-demographic questionnaire; 4) Satisfaction with own body – a specifically designed questionnaire of 20 statements.
Some statistically significant differences were established. The woman with normal weight was considered more attractive that the woman with excessive weight. Men liked more the woman with normal weight that the overweight woman. The overweight woman was less attractive for men that for women. Women considered the overweight woman as less attentive that the woman with normal weight, and, on the contrary, men considered the overweight woman as more attentive. Men believed that the woman with normal weight has more self-discipline that the overweight woman. Men considered the overweight woman more interesting companion in conversation. The higher is respondent’s Body Mass Index the clearer is the tendency to consider that the overweight woman is less respected by colleagues, the job may bring her negative emotions and she may have less friends. The lesser is respondent’s satisfaction with own body the more unpleasant character the respondent attributes to the overweight woman.
