Test writing is an integral part of every subject at school, and English is not an exception. Moreover, it often brings along negative feelings such as worry and nervousness or test anxiety, which may interfere with students’ test performance and change their general feelings and attitude to testing process. To prevent its negative influence, different strategies and elements on reducing test anxiety, can be used. Therefore the Paper was written not only to raise students’ awareness on test anxiety but also to find the most effective strategies for eliminating it.
The Diploma Paper consists of two parts, where the first part is based on the theory on reasons for testing students at Secondary School, different aspects of test anxiety and strategies for reducing it. The second part is a case study performed at Ezere Secondary School. During the case study students from Secondary School classes were asked to complete the questionnaire in order to find out their awareness of test anxiety, attitude and opinion about English language tests and to identify frequency of experienced test anxiety before, during and after the tests. It was followed by conducting a lesson to Form 12 on the theme test anxiety. Further the author designed and administered two tests, including various test anxiety reducing elements and activities. Finally, students were asked to complete questionnaire 2 in order to gain information about how useful these techniques had been and clarify affective strategies on reducing test anxiety with a help of fieldnotes on the students’ interview.
As a result of the research the author was able to acknowledge the topicality on test anxiety at Secondary School, find different ways on how students can overcome it and how teachers can assist them.
The most important conclusion is that when students are aware of test anxiety and informed about possible ways of reducing it, together with teachers, who are aware of the same issue, they may successfully eliminate test anxiety’s influence on testing process.
