1) novērošana, lai noteiktu skolēnu sociolingvistiskās kompetences pilnveidi;
2) skolēnu darbu analīze, lai izpētītu skolēnu sociolingvistiskās kompetences pilnveidošanu – valodas reģistra, lingvistisko marķieru un pieklājības konvencijas apgūšanu;
A great number of young people have improved their English language skills through movies, TV shows and music video clips. Although the language is acquired it is also important to practise it so that the speaker is able to use the language appropriately to particular communication situations when in contact with native speakers of English.
The author of the Diploma Paper is of the opinion that authentic videos can improve learners’ sociolinguistic competence when applied in the English lessons at school.
In order to examine the usage of authentic videos for the learners’ improvement of sociolinguistic competence, the author conducted a case study in Riga English Grammar School. To complete the case study the following data collection methods were used:
1)observation to examine improvement of learners’ sociolinguistic competence;
2) analysis of learners’ works to study improvement of learners’ sociolinguistic competence – mastering of register differences, linguistic markers and politeness conventions;
3) questionnaire to clarify learners’ attitude towards usage of authentic videos for the improvement of sociolinguistic competence – mastering of skill to use English language appropriate to specific social context.
According to the findings, the data show that majority of learners consider authentic video as a powerful teaching aid for the improvement of their sociolinguistic competence. Also observations conducted and the analysis of learners’ work proved that with help of specific authentic videos learners develop skills necessary for communication with native speakers of English in various situations. The skill to choose appropriate language registers when delivering a public speech to certain audience or preparing a report for a TV program, for instance. The learners also proved that they were able to perform related activities on their own afterwards.
The author concludes that findings from the research show that information stated in the literature study to a great extent agrees with the results of findings. During the video lessons learners’ developed sociolinguistic skills for speech delivery, creation of report and movie review in English. Thus, the author of the Diploma Paper considers that authentic videos helped learners to improve their sociolinguistic competence.
