Master thesis contains 57 pages (9 pages – appendixes), 4 figures and 6 tables. The aim of the master thesis was to investigate the impact of collective guilt on prosocial behavior and to try to interpret it based on psychological theories and concepts. Theoretical part summarizes various studies and explanations of collective guilt impact on prosocial behavior. This phenomenon can be explained either from social identity and self-categorization theory perspective (Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher, & Wetherell, 1987 as mentioned Wohl, Branscombe, & Klar, 2006), or paying attention to four collective guilt basic features: self-categorization as a member of a perpetrator group, acceptance of ingroup’s responsibility, illegitimacy appraisal and reparation costs (Wohl, Branscombe, & Klar, 2006), either speaking about justice features (Mallett, & Swim, 2004 as mentioned Branscombe, & Doosje, 2004), or paying attention to empathy (Hoffman, 2000).
The aim of the present study was to determine whether collective guilt facilitates prosocial behavior. There were 60 medicine programme students of both sexes aged from 20 till 28 participating in experiment; they were randomly assigned to four groups, each group contained 15 participants. The following methods were used in experiment: modified computer game „ Prisoners’ dilemma”, manipulation of ingroup identification, manipulation of collective guilt, as well as identifications with ingroup and collective guilt statements. In order to measure identification, five statements from „Ingroup identity questionnaire” (Cadinu & Reggiori, 2002 „Ingroup identity measure”) were used and particularized for the specifics of the group. In order to measure collective guilt, three statements from „Collective guilt scale” (Branscombe, Slugoski, & Kappen, 2004 as mentioned Branscombe, & Doosje, 2004 „Collective guilt scale”) were used and particularized for the specifics of the group. The hypothesis that “collective guilt facilitates prosocial behavior” was approved during the study. The more man feels collective guilt, the more he /she is ready to cooperate. The stronger ingroup identification, the less person is ready to admit collective guilt, and as result to cooperate less, in comparison with a person with lower ingroup identification. Socially and practically the results of this study are very significant, because by knowing the tendencies revealed by this study, people’s attitudes towards group actions, its consequences and reparation efforts may be changed.
