The title of the Diploma Paper is “Student Teachers’ Classroom Language in Giving Instructions in English Lessons” and the author of the Diploma Paper believes that the clarity of the instructions given in the classroom determines the flow of the whole lesson. The aim of the Diploma Paper was to explore the ways in which English language teachers can give instructions in English lessons
The chosen research method was a case study as several particular student teachers’ classroom language was analysed. In March – May, 2011, 41 3rd and 4th year students of the English Teacher Education Programme at the University of Latvia, Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art were asked to fill in a questionnaire that was sent to them via email and distributed during lectures in order to find out the ways they gave instructions in their lessons. Nine 4th year students’ lessons were observed and the field notes – analysed. The recorded phrases were classified and a collection of instructions that could be used in English lessons was created.
With the help of the questionnaire the author of the Diploma Paper found out that the respondents were aware of various ways how instructions could be given, and they also applied several strategies of giving instructions and checking students’ comprehension of these instructions in their lessons. The observation of student teachers’ lessons proved that even though they lacked experience and confidence, they were able to give clear instructions to their students; however, sometimes the instructions were vague, confusing and did not show appropriate English language skills.
It is possible that the inability to consistently give clear and understandable instructions is caused by the lack of planning before the lessons and relying on improvisation skills. Chaotic speech, including the delivery of instructions, might also be caused by nervousness and insecurity when standing in front of the classroom, which could be overcome if the students practise public speaking and keep developing their language skills.
