Abstract
The aim of the research was to clarify whether or not there is a connection between the SES level a person belongs to and how many social groups he/she adds itself to. According to the research of Markus and Kitayama (1991) and of researches carried out in Lithuania (Beresneviciene&Shirai, 2005) the following hypothesis was posed: The social structures of individuals belonging to a high social and economic status (SES) are less expressed in Self concept than of those belonging to a lower social and economic status (SES). Selection amount – 105 respondents- aged between 23 and 60. The research used a Twenty Statement test (Kuhn&McPartland, 1954) and a questionnaire for determining SES by criteria – level of education, work position, level of income, expanse of acquaintances, value of private property, SES self-assessment. The questionnaire was created within the framework of this research in order to characterize the respondents in SES dimension. Creating the questionnaire, laws and regulations of Cabinet of Ministers (Cabinet of Ministers of Republic of Latvia, 2003) on classification and order in which a person is certifiable as poor were observed. In the result of the research the hypothesis was not verified, Spirmen r = - 0,14, p > 0.05 ns Keywords: SES (social and economic status), social identity, social status, interdependent self, independent self, self concept.
