The present Diploma Paper explores cooperative learning in teaching English to learners with behavioral difficulties, because the implications of behavioral problems research are essential for providing well-balanced management in educational settings. The author of the paper pays attention to the characteristics of learners with behavioral difficulties, and an approach to educating such learners, as well as casts light on the principles of comprehensive classroom management. Furthermore, the paper introduces cooperative learning as an approach to group work, the peculiarities of which make this form of teaching and learning one of the most suitable ELT methods for application in classes with behavioral problems.
The aim of the paper is to study English language teaching organized in cooperative groups as an approach which best develops social and learning skills in learners with behavioral problems.
The research was carried out in Riga Secondary School No. 20 with one group of the 8th grade students with the total number of 16 students with behavioural problems. At first, the school English teacher of the participants was interviewed about the students’ level of English and general knowledge, as well as the role of cooperative learning in the organization of the English language teaching process. At the same time students were asked to complete a questionnaire based on the activities integrated into the teaching programme. Subsequently the author of the paper selected six activities featuring principles of cooperative learning, and made a detailed analysis of the students’ work on the activities and the results of the work. While practicing out and discussing the activities, the data were collected by observing the students’ participation and attitudes towards the completed tasks.
The results of the research indicate that cooperative learning groups give each member the support, help, encouragement, and assistance he or she needs to make academic progress and develop cognitively and socially in healthy ways.
