In the last decade English language teaching professionals have participated in uncountable discussions about the possibilities of developing students’ intercultural awareness. However, almost nothing has been said about the possibilities of developing it applying project work which is also becoming more and more popular in schools of Latvia.
The Diploma Paper is a continuation of the Term Paper with the title “Intercultural Communication Activities in Developing Students’ Intercultural Awareness in English Lessons of Primary Classes”. When writing the Term Paper, the author concluded that higher proficiency of English is needed for students to participate in activities developing intercultural awareness. As the language proficiency of students at the age of Secondary School is higher, the process of carrying out a project about people of different cultures, especially Gypsies that are mostly despised in Latvia, has a potential to increase their intercultural awareness.
Thus, to reach the aim of the research – to explore the possibilities of developing students’ intercultural awareness applying project work in Secondary school, relevant literature about intercultural communication, intercultural awareness, its assessment, and different types of project work had been analysed.
Then the case study was conducted in Jurmala 1st Gymnasium, Grade 10m1. The following methods of data collection were used: 2 questionnaires for the students (the 1st was given before, and another – after the project week); then, the questioannaire for the teachers of English was given, and the intercultural awareness checklist − for students; the project assessment checklist, and the analysis of students’ project work were also used.
After the students had carried out the project work, the author of the Diploma Paper counted how many sub-components of intercultural awareness they had been developed, and figured out the percentage, thus, both students had developed 75% of attitudes; as for knowledge/comprehension, one of them had developed 60%, and another − 67%. Concerning the skills, one raised 87% of them, but another − 75%.
It was also found out by the author of the Paper that, either the objectives of the project were completed by the students, the project work should be carried out more often than once a year during the project week in Secondary school to develop the intercultural awareness completely.
If teachers still doubt about the sense of their work, they should definitely start developing students’ intercultural awareness applying project work as it makes teacher’s work really meaningful.
