During her teaching practice, the author noticed that the students often lacked the necessary motivation to study the foreign language. She made an assumption that their motivation would increase by learning subject matter that they find meaningful in life. After reviewing different literature sources, the author became acquainted with the recently introduced Content-Based Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach. She found out that there are several models of this approach, characterised by the degree how intensively the content is integrated in the language lessons, or whether content lessons are taught in a foreign language. The literature research revealed that CLIL can be applied to all education settings, but in Latvia it would be the most appropriate for secondary and higher education settings, since it already has been introduced in several universities, colleges and very few secondary schools across Latvia.
Therefore, the author set the Aim of the Paper to examine how integrating CLIL instruction in English lessons at Secondary Vocational school would facilitate students' motivation to acquire this foreign language.
Case study was conducted in the Centre of Graphic Design of Riga State Technical School. The research was done during one month. A sample of 42 students of Forms 10, 11 and 12 took part in the research, and two methods of data collection were used: questionnaires and observations.
The results of the case study showed that using Theme-based model of CLIL approach, students' motivation was increased due to the useful and exciting theme -the Rules of the Road – and the help of different motivational strategies, such as an informative reward system, increasingly challenging tasks and informal oral feedback. Observations confirmed the fact that academically weaker students showed more commitment due to the “tick” system, whereas academically stronger students preferred more challenging tasks and informal oral feedback. Still, the majority of students with average and good grades worked with apparent pleasure because of interest towards the subject. It means that the behaviourism theory to raise motivation by extrinsic rewards did not prove true with more capable students.
The questionnaires showed that students were interested in the theme and more than a half of them would like to continue learning according to the CLIL principle in the future too.
By summing up the results, the author states that Theme-based model of CLIL approach is a promising and motivating way how to link both language and content learning, since it raises motivation to learn content and provides meaningful practice of foreign language.
