Izmantotas metodes datu vākšanai bija: a) skolotāju anketas, b) divas anketas skolēniem un c) skolēnu savstarpējās novērtēšanas tabulas.
Development of students’ speaking skills always has been one of the main aims of the learning/teaching process, as students need to have appropriate speaking skills for the real communication outside school.
The author of the present Paper became interested in the question how students’ speaking skills can be developed in secondary school, so she began to look for the activities aimed to improve this language skill. The author came across one article where was described such method as dramatization of poems, she found it interesting and decided to find out if dramatization of poetry can be effectively used for the development of speaking skills in secondary school.
The present Diploma paper was written with the aim to prove that dramatization of poetry is a good means to develop secondary school students’ speaking skills.
In order to reach the aim and verify the hypothesis of the Diploma paper, that dramatization of poetry is a powerful means of stimulating language learning and development of students’ speaking skills in secondary school, the case study was carried out in Riga Purvciems Secondary School during the period from 28.01- 20.03.2008.
The research was conducted among the students of this school and the teachers of English. The students of two classes, 10c and 11c participated in the research. The total number of the participants was 21 students (9 students from 10th class and 12 students from the 11th class).
The methods used for data collection were: a) questionnaires for teachers b) two questionnaires for students and c) students’ peer evaluation forms. All the collected data was analyzed and the results are described in the research part of the Diploma paper.
The collected results indicated that dramatization of poetry as the activity for development of speaking skills is almost not used by teachers of English, although the teachers and students agreed that dramatization of poems can help to improve speaking skills and be successfully used in the process language acquisition, as it involves students physically, cognitively and emotionally in the language learning process.
Moreover, dramatization of poetry combines not only the teaching of language, but also teaching poetry, so it is rather useful activity for the teaching English literature at school, because many students do not have special literature lessons in school.
