The aim of the study is to find out if there are interrelations between
attachment and alexithymia of adult drug and alcohol addicts. Relationship
questionnaire and Toronoto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and author-made
demographic data form is used in the study. Total of 98 respondents participated in
the study: psychoactive drug addicts (n=34), alcohol addicts (n=33), and control
group (n=31).
Results show positive correlation between Fearful-Avoidant attachment style
and Difficulty Describing Feelings, positive correlation between Anxious-
Preoccupied attachment style and Difficulty Describing Feelings, positive correlation
between Anxious-Preoccupied attachment style and Difficulty Describing Feelings for
psychoactive drug addicts. Several correlations are found for alcohol addicts: negative
correlation between Secure attachment style and Difficulty Describing Feelings,
negative correlation between Secure attachment style and total alexithymia index,
negative correlation between Secure attachment style and Externally-Oriented
Thinking. Only one correlation found for control group participants: between
Dismissive-Avoidant attachment style and Externally-Oriented Thinking.
There are no differences found between groups regarding their attachment
styles. However, there are significant differences between groups found regarding
their alexithymia – the differeneces are on all 3 subscales and total alexithymia index
of TAS.
