Nowadays, mastering several foreign languages becomes more and more important. One of the main points in learning a new language is the ability to apply the knowledge of the 1st foreign language (English).
Learning French, Latvian students have difficulty to understand French vocabulary and grammatical structures, comparing with the Latvian language, because Latvian is a synthetic language, but French, like English, is an analytical language. Regarding to common points of English and French, it is possible to teach French on the basis of comparison with the English language.
The aim of this diploma paper is to study the possibility of using the previous knowledge of English in learning French in the 10th grade.
Having analyzed the foreign language teaching methods and approaches, it is possible to conclude that the contrastive didactics has a significant role in modern foreign language teaching and learning.
In the practical part of the diploma paper a case study was done in Sigulda State Gymnasium with 23 students from the 1st of September 2010 until the 22nd of April. For data collection the author used such techniques as watching students, surveying teachers and pupils and giving some diagnostic exercises to the pupils.
First, the author used the comparison of French and English within several themes during French classes and wrote down the observations.
The tasks were also given to the pupils to find the English influence on learning French.
Then the teacher and student surveys were made to find out their attitude to the teaching and learning French on the basis of comparison with the English language.
The result of the practical research lets the author conclude that both teachers and students have a positive attitude towards the use of English in mastering the 3rd foreign language. The knowledge of English is always or often useful to students, especially the comparison of French and English vocabulary and grammar. Students want to continue learning French on the basis of comparison with the English language.
Basing on the facts collected during the case study, it can be concluded that in acquiring the French language in high school, the awareness of common points of both languages and the contrastive learning must be developed, because it improves both foreign language skills, facilitates the learning process and develops the cognitive processes.
