The present master paper „Establishment and Development of Cēsis City from 13th till 16th Century” views the establishment of Cēsis city and its further development in Livonia.
The paper describes the conditions and époque of foundation and development of Cēsis, assessing economy, political status, planning, social elements and religious life of the populated area and later the city.
The results of the research verify that the populated area Cēsis developed during the 13th century as a village near the castle and the place was first referred to as a city only in 1314. More than three centuries the development of the city was significantly impacted by the closeness of the order’s castle that promoted trade which served as the basis for the development of the city. Along with uncommonly active religious life the city was developed in accordance with the typical medieval city planning principles, the main elements of which were the city church, city hall and stone wall.
