In the master thesis the synchronization of the business cycles is being evaluated in the context of the Latvian economic development. The main objective of this study is to perform a complex analysis of the business cycle synchronization channels and the cross border concordance of the business cycle phases in order to evaluate the integration of the Latvian economy with other countries and its dependency on both regional and global developments. In order to meet the objective and assess the importance of certain synchronization channels, both simultaneous equation model and Markov regime switching model are being specified and estimated.
The results suggest that the trade intensity and intra-industry trade linkages have both significant and positive effect on the synchronization of business cycles. No significant effect of financial integration on the synchronization was captured, though it can be explained by certain peculiarities of the Latvian financial sector. All-in-all, the results suggest that the Latvian economy has been quite strongly synchronized with the global business cycle, lagging behing by roughly one quarter.
